The Story and the Origins of

The House of Hideous

all things in life, including me and you, are in an imperfect state of flux, so we strive not for perfection, but for excellence instead.

for a long time we wanted to make bags from a hide which had all the wear and tear of a life well lived, ingrained on it. telling us a story. a story about scars. scars that make us beautiful.

so we went, sifted through many hides and handpicked a full grain tan leather, to make a bag. It had growth lines, natural variations, fat wrinkles, small scars perhaps from a mating session or fighting over a rival for the mate, scars from travels through the woods. or such. It was one of a kind. we thought, “every hide is one of a kind” unique, much like us. we are all made up of our experiences as we go through the tumble of time we call life. the flaws are seen as a unique piece of the leather’s history, which adds to its beauty.

the aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete” in nature.

the full grain leather is always changing, its nature is such. it is the most expensive part of a hide since it breathes, guarantees toughness and longevity.

after acquiring the full grain leather, we got into the details. the strength of various threads. the grammage of the thread. the number of stitches per inch, discovered the incredible strength of the gutermann thread. as we went through the skins, the small marks on them fascinated us, made us ponder on how absolutely beautiful they make every leather, reminded us of the Japanese process of pottery called Kintsugi, the unique character it gave, almost a personality. there was beauty that can be Hideous. it was a cathartic experience, we fell in love with the art.

and from that point on it took us five long years of searching to set up a team which understands and loves making leather bags as much as we did.

we make every bag out of hand-picked full grain leather chosen from hundreds of hides, stitched with loving experienced hands, using strong German threads and following very high standards, we put in front of you these labours of love, pieces of beauty. this, piece of art. and like all art, this too is abandoned, into your fold, as it becomes part of your personality.
